Gr. 1-2. A limited vocabulary manages to convey a pleasant story without becoming forced. A trio of siblings gets up extra early, prepares a simple breakfast tray, and takes it to their mother for a warm, wake-up birthday surprise. Accompanying line-and-wash drawings are simple and brisk, with enough character to give the pages a comfortable, everyday look. DMW. Mothers-Fiction [CIP] 87-26216

PreS-Gr 1 Three children prepare a birthday treat for their mother in this easy reader whose slight text and lack of any real story are partially compensated for by appealing illustrations. Their attempt at preparing an attractive breakfast tray is sabotaged by the cat, but order is restored and mom is warmly appreciative. The text is limited to simple statements of the action. More of the story is developed through Morgan's illustrations, which are large and unclutteredclear enough for even very young children to follow. However, the lack of clutter makes the house seem almost barren. The children are rosy cheeked and wholesome. Although Surprise! is an adequate early reader, it is uninspired. Many superior ``surprise for mother'' books exist, such as Eve Bunting's Mother's Day Mice (Clarion, 1986). Surprise! is not likely to excite children about reading, but it will give beginning readers practice while providing a warm and mildly amusing picture of single-parent family life. Louise L.
